Woolwich: The Missing Link
- Synopsis
- Excavations in Woolwich, under the direction of Alice Pandrich, have revealed two 17th-century pottery kilns, part of a local industry whose existence was previously unknown. The first kiln to be discovered produced earthenware. The second produced stoneware ca 1610-1640, and is the first such kiln to be discovered in this country; it has necessitated the redating of the origins of stoneware production in England. The kilns and their products are shown together with the method by which the stoneware kiln was lifted, using polyurethane foam and a specially designed lifting raft.
