Wilton’s Music Hall, London

Synopsis
Illustrates the design, history and use of the oldest surviving music hall in Great Britain. Opened in 1859, Wilton’s is especially interesting because it has remained virtually unaltered, never having been rebuilt to suit the major changes in music hall which took place after its doors closed in 1880. Thus, it affords an opportunity to study an example of the small, intimate strictly local halls of the mid-19th century. The slide set is in two parts: Part 1 (23 slides), shows the setting of the hall and features of the building itself in relation both to the development of theatrical design and fitting, and to its use by patrons and entertainers; Part 2 (16 slides) consists of the surviving printed material (playbills, programmes etc.) connected with the hall, and pictures of entertainers who appeared there.
