Who Cares? (2 Parts)

Synopsis
1: Concentrates on a day in the lives of five patients in a medical ward where the ‘nursing process’ has not yet been adopted. It shows some of the consequences of failing to identify patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The care which is shown is unco-ordinated and fragmented. No nurse is seen to be wilfully or carelessly neglectful, but the individuality of patients is not fully acknowledged. One patient, for example, is discharged prematurely from hospital to inadequate home circumstances, where he is visited by the community sister. Another is transferred to a surgical ward.
2: In a surgical ward where the ‘nursing process’ is in operation. It concentrates on relationships between patients and nurses, highlighting the importance of effective interpersonal skills needed to individualise and evaluate nursing care. Also highlights communication as a means of exchanging information in the planning and implementation of care. The film does not attempt specifically to show physical care in progress, nor the important role of the nurse in the overall observation of the patients’ physical state during assessment. Shows monitoring by a nursing officer and an ‘audit meeting’ where members of the unit staff come together to discuss the functions and effectiveness of the ‘nursing process’. It is made clear throughout that the value of the ‘nursing process’ lies in careful assessment and planning, constant monitoring of progress and overall continuity of care.
