Whale Hunters of Lamalera, The

Synopsis: Follows the daily life of the Lamaholot, whale hunters from the village of Lamalera on the Indonesian island of Lembata, a community of 1500 people. The villagers have to fish to survive - their preferred quarry is the sperm whale. Commercial whaling has been banned internationally but subsistence whaling is permitted by International Whaling Commission regulations in Alaska, the USA, the USSR and Greenland. Indonesia is not a signatory. Seven whales were caught in Lamalera in 1987. Filmed over a four-week period in June 1987. RAI*
