Synopsis
Looks at the social and medicinal significance of plants in north-east Brazil through the framework of organisations operating within the Plantas do Nordeste or PNE, a scientific initiative in collaboration with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. In this poverty-stricken region of Brazil plants are often the only affordable medicine, and it is therefore vital that they be properly identified. Kew staff are helping to do so and are also involved in supporting the work of local ‘living pharmacies’ - gardens cultivated to grow crops with known medicinal properties. These low-cost medicines are available in, for example, a hospice for malnourished babies and in a slum community where the children are taught to cultivate the plants.
