W B Yeats’ ‘The Tower’: An Exposition

Synopsis
The threat of old age to the will and the heart: Professor Brooks comments on this problem posed by Yeats, the poet’s consideration of his self and achievements, and his adjustment to the limitations of old age based on the experience of earlier life and not a renunciation of it. Leading the listener through the three movements which make up the poem, Professor Brooks interprets the imagery of the tower and its inhabitants, the daws, and the swan, which enrich and enshrine the poet’s acceptance and fruitful assimilation of the difficulties of advancing years, in a proud last will and testament.
