Volcanoes of the Kenya Rift

Synopsis
Volcanoes of the East African Rift provide first-hand evidence of the evolution of continental lithosphere. Discusses the history of crustal and mantle processes thought to occur under the rift. Describes the formation of the Menengai Crater, with field evidence of pre-caldera lavas and the post-caldera eruption that formed the crater. Suswa has carbonate-rich ash flows, and syenite nodules have been found on its flanks, suggesting fractional crystallisation processes occurring at the top of the chamber, which is zoned with basalts forming the dome connecting part. Presents evidence for basalts underlying the whole area and for magma mixing under the crust. Speculated on how, with dykes running the length of the rift system, the processes are linked.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
