Vision, Movement and Balance

Synopsis
Demonstrates that the detection of body movement, normally considered to be a function of proprioceptors, is in fact mediated to a very significant extent by visual feedback. The concept to the ‘optic flow field’ is introduced by examples and a model. A subject is shown in a ‘moving walls’ experimental room reacting to changes in the optic flow field and cases are examined where visual information either agrees with or conflicts with information from mechanical receptors. Shows that optic flow field information can dominate, and in cases of conflict, can cause infants to fall and adults to overbalance.*
