Accounting for the Environment
- Synopsis
- Professor Rob Gray, author of ‘The Greening of Accountancy’, explains different approaches to ‘green’ accounting. Some firms, for example take environmental costs from profits. A more pro-active approach, adopted by the Co-op Bank and ICI, is to use environmental criteria to evaluate investments. The most advanced position is to try to incorporate the concept of sustainability into a company’s accounts, measuring natural as well as man-made capital; it is argued that only in this way will businesses give ‘true and fair’ value of actions that threaten resources.
