Video Letter II: Japan into the Nineties

Synopsis
Series exploring the structure and values of contemporary Japanese society through the eyes of people experiencing each aspect of life.
1: Looks at the education systems and discusses examination pressures and how students spend their leisure time.
2: Looks at the college/university years which are the least pressurised times for young people, and also includes accommodation, leisure, the role of women and other related social issues.
3: Examines the world of work, asking what it is like to work for a Japanese company; do the Japanese work harder; how does this relate to the structure and values of Japanese society. Also explores the changing role of women and the work ethic, and touches upon accommodation, leisure, food transport and marriage.
4: The roles, responsibilities and daily routine of parents with a young family; education, family finances, husband’s career and commitment to the extended family, religion. Asks if housewives’ roles are different in Japan; is Japan a sexist society; are the Japanese workaholics; is religion important.
5: Examines the role, responsibilities and routine of a housewife. Discusses the changing role of women, the education of daughters, care of the elderly and increased leisure opportunities. Asks how it is different to be middle-aged in Japan, how and why the role of women is echanging, where these trends are likely to led.
6: Looks at the approach of retirement and the issues of an aging society, increased leisure time and ethnic minorities and refugees. Asks how important events are celebrated in Japan, and what we can learn from the Japanese about an ageing society.
