Victorian Ways of Death

Synopsis
Visits cemeteries in Manchester, London and the Buckinghamshire countryside, to point out the evidence they provide of Victorian attitudes to death and burial. An examination of memorials, including some in Westminster Abbey, mourning paraphenalia and coffin design illuminates the nature of life and death in a changing society. Examines the impact of industrialisation and secularisation and discusses mourning and undertaking practices in the 19th century.
