Synopsis
A video-based training programme concerning the abuse and mistreatment of older people in residential and nursing care. The video focuses on the disturbing experiences of one particular family who found themselves victims of bad practice, inept bureaucracy, professional cover-up and explicit lies when a relative died after being admitted to a nursing home. Issues discussed include: the negative stereotyping of older people; the increasing problem of mistreatment of older people; categories, predisposing factors and signs and symptoms of mistreatment; what to do in response to mistreatment; misplaced professional loyalty; malfunctioning organisational culture; creating supportive environments; complaints procedures; challenging power structures; developing effective policies and procedures; effective staff support and supervision; involving relatives; identifying future action.
