Very Large Scale Integration

Synopsis
Single microchips can now be made with well over 100,000 components, each two microns wide. For comparison a human hair is about 70 microns wide. The Alvey initiative will encourage development in the technology, both to design and manufacture chips with the density of components. Britain, however, is lagging behind the USA and Japan in the production of standard microelectronic circuits. Taking part in the discussion are Mr G Pardoe, chairman of the panel; B Oakley, Dr W Fawcett of the Alvey Directorate; I Barron, Inmos Ltd; Prof R Housden, Professor of Computing Science at the Open University, and Dr G Vanstone, RACAL Research Ltd.
