Vascular Structure of the Palm ‘Rhapis Excelsa’ (2 Parts)

Synopsis
1 (1977-78): Illustration of the three-dimensional anatomical structure using a two-dimensional sequential (running) picture in which time replaces the third dimension. Long series of microscopic cross sections were filmed on individual frames. Two vascular systems, their connecting networks and branches, and a singular vascular bundle system are presented in successive transverse stem sections and in radial coordinate projections (simplified longitudinal diagrams of the bundle). With animated sequences.
2 (1977-80): An animated diagram shows the growing palm; young leaves appear at the top of the crown, they are displaced downward, mature, and finally shed at the bottom of the the crown. The apical region is shown in an ascending series of transverse sections, and further explanations are given with a median longitudinal section. The developmental relationship of major, minor and cortical traces is explained. Moving diagrams show the developmental pattern of the entire vascular system of the stem.
