Valued Environments, Environmental Values
- Synopsis
- Raises basic issues about the relationship between society and environment, including the complexity of natural processes, the varied demands placed by societies on the environment, positive and negative impacts of these demands, the variety of institutions involved in trying to regulate environmental use, and the differences in philosophy and values which underlie debates and conflicts in the area. Using as examples the Lake District, UK, and Yosemite National Park, USA, the programme focuses on the late nineteenth century and the present day. In the last century, the writings of Wordsworth, Ruskin, Emerson, Thoreau and Muir were vital in stating aesthetic and humanist cases against unbridled development. Issues such as the Thirlmere reservoir, Hetch Hetchey, railway construction, and mineral and timber extraction, therefore had considerable effects and laid the foundation for later development in environmental conservation and management.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
