Utterance: The Music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
- Synopsis
- Discusses Qawwali, a devotional music which combines complex ragas with exultant spontaneity. Its repetitive poetical force has made it an essential part of Muslim worship at Sufi shrines throughout the Indian sub-continent. It also has a large following amongst Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Christians and atheists. The musician, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, belongs to a family of Sufi singers whose name has been linked with Qawwali music as far back as the 15th century. Today he and his group are innovative and accomplished practitioners of a musical form which requires a lifetime commitment.
