Utopia: Orange, Green and Purple
- Synopsis
- Discusses Georges Seurat’s ‘A Sunday on La Grande Fayette 1884’ (1886) in terms of the painting itself, the painter, and a palette of colour: pigment, composition and light effects. The painting caused a scandal when exhitited in 1886 - the landscape is treated in the classical manner but the characters are alienated from each other. A multitude of small dots create an astonishing light. Seurat worked his palette according to an elaborate theory of colour, and the many facets of this technique have influenced later generations.
