- Synopsis
- The University of Salamanca was founded in the 13th century. By the 16th century it was one of the major European universities. In the early part of the century it was a centre of humanist learning. Erasmus and Copernicus were on the syllabus. As the fear of the Reformation spread through Europe, the teaching at Salamanca become more restrictive. As Spain’s empire expanded she need more bureaucrats to run it so the once broad-based curriculum came to concentrate mainly on law.
