- Four-part cosmology series on the universe, using accessible ideas to explain advances in cosmology and astronomy. In four parts: 1) Big Bang: explores ideas of Steven Hawking, Wendy Freedman, Bob Kirshner, Sandra Faber, Martin Rees and Lawrence Krauss in relation to the Big Bang and the continuing expansion of the universe; 2) Stars: examines the birth, life and death of stars, particularly the sun. Discusses eclipses, red giants, sunspots, cosmic rays, black holes 3) Planets: the planets we know and, with the aid of the Hubble telescope and ‘Cassini’ probe to Saturn, looks towards other solar systems; 4) Alien Life: The continual discovery of planets beyond our solar system has caused experts to believe that life can exist under much wider conditions than ever thought possible. The latest probe to Jupiter’s moon Europa represents the greatest chance yet of discovering extra-terrestrial life. Narrated by John Hurt.
