Unification of Italy, The

Synopsis
Looks at the reasons for the creation of a unified, secular state which few appeared to want. Emphasises the disunity of Italy in term of class, economics and politics and stresses the importance of declining Austrian power in allowing the creation of a unified Italy, and the role of Napoleon III and Pope Pius IX in provoking a reaction that made the state secular. The Piedmontese government are shown as reluctant nationalists, taking the lead only to prevent the growth of a more radical republicanism. Uses a number of contemporary visual sources. Presented by Professor J A Davis.
