- Alternative title
- Undressed: Fashion in the 20th Century
- Synopsis
- Four-part series detailing the history of 20th-century fashion by examining its many influences.
Tape 1: 1) REBELLION: Focuses on how fashion has mirrored social change and highlights some influences, including the sexual revolution, art, modernism, constructionism, radicalism, minimalism and existentialism. Examines how music and youth culture have defined some of fashion’s true rebels. Features designers Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen, Malcolm McLaren and Mary Quant. 2) FANTASY: Fashion as an art form, looking at trends towards exoticism at the turn of the century, free expression and surrealism in the 1960s, and ‘haute couture’. Features designers Christian Lacroix, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren, Issey Miyake, and André Courrèges.
Tape 2: 3): POWER: Examines fashion as an industry the marketing that is so crucial to its success. Charts the creation of the major fashion empires and the swings of power between France, Europe and the USA. Also explores the influence of the press, the development of fashion photography, the emergence of the supermodel and the rise of the designer label as status symbol. Features designers Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld and Calvin Klein. 4) SEX: Shows fashion’s response to the enormous changes in sexual attitudes during the 20th century. The greatest shift in fashion was perhaps women’s appropriation of men’s clothing. Also looks at the modern-day role of the corset.
