Ultrasound Study of the Foetal Heart

Synopsis
The most important forms of congenital heart disease can now be diagnosed in utero. Ultrasound study of the foetal heart can be carried out at the time of routine echocardiographic examination of the foetus in the pregnant woman. Real-time study of foetal hearts is shown with congenital malformation and normal subjects. Most studies are carried out using two standard views with the ultrasonic beam. First the four-chamber view where the beam enters the apex of the heart and is directed towards the upper part of the atria. The second view is where the heart is shown laterally. The authors conclude by showing that studies of foetal hearts are most necessary for pre-natal screening because cardiac malformations are the most important group of congenital defects.
