Two-Way Motion: Simultaneous Differential Equations
- Synopsis
- A ball bearing, released from the edge of a bowl will not roll down through the lowest point and up the other side if the bowl has a cross section designed to model two particular linerar second order homogeneous differential equations. Shows two versiond of this bowl: a real bowl with imperfections and a ‘perfect’ computer-generated bowl. The motion in both bowls is complicated, but in two directions there is a simple to-and-fro oscillation along the same path - a straight line orbit. These orbits correspond to the eigenvectors of the matrix representing the equations. Shows that the general orbit is found by combining the orbits along the eigenvectors. Notes that if the periods of the fundamental osciallations are not in an exact ratio, the orbit of the ball bearing changes radically.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
