Two Children of Oedipus

Synopsis
A discussion of Voltaire’s ‘Oedipe’ and Kleist’s comedy ‘The Broken Pitcher’ as adaptations of ‘Oedipus Rex’. Voltaire’s inability to perceive the problematic nature of truth in Sophocles’ drama and Kleist’s transformation of the Sophoclean situation into the wilful suppression of the truth illustrate in different ways the incompatibility of the paradigm of the ancient tragedy of recognition with a modern sensibility.
