Tuareg, The

Synopsis
Follows a group of Tuareg living high up in the Hoggar Mountains, at the foot of Tahat, the highest mountain in Algeria. Details, after some introductory descriptive material about Tuareg social life, the profound economic and other changes which have come about in the past few years as a result of the ending of the system of slavery and of contract labour which used to help keep Tuareg camps supplied with grain. Drought too has caused severe loss of camels and other stock and has made it difficult to keep up the caravans which used to travel south to Niger 500 miles away to exchange salt for grain. Apparently, if present trends continue, few Tuareg will continue for long to live in the desert tending their stock. They will take up the newly created opportunities for wage labour at the tourist hotels which are springing up in the area.
