New archaeological research explains the real world of the Roman ampitheatre, and how cruelty and violence became a factor in political and social life, as events became more and more bloodthirsty in order to uphold the status of the emperors. Uses contemporary accounts and computer reconstructions of the Coliseum in Rome.
