Triumph of the Embryo, The

Synopsis
Follows the development of the human egg cell from the moment it is fertilised to the time of birth, and shows the egg dividing and multiplying. Traces the complex of chemical signals that manipulate and direct the growing mass of cells and watches as it folds and folds again to become something we can recognise as human. The central problem of development biology is to explain this process of growth and organisation - how a single cell can give rise to a brain, a leg, a liver, or an eye. Are there special genes for arms? Recent discoveries are beginning to provide answers.
