Synopsis

Summarises the effects of foreign object damage particularly caused by bird ingestion to aero gas turbines. A vector diagram shows the effect of a bird’s impact on a fan blade. The various failure modes are illustrated together with a number of tests and reduced scale fans. Aerodynamic efficiency is discussed in the light of the conflicting requirements that need to be met to combat the effects of impact. It is recommended that the film be seen before CONTAINMENT.
