Tribo-Electrochemistry

Synopsis
The metals used in various devices such as pumps, food processing equipment, tools and orthopaedic implants are exposed to the combined attack of wear and corrosion which limit their performance and lifespan. Unfortunately the tribocorrosion phenomena cannot always be predicted on the basis of separate corrosion and wear considerations, but the combination of mechanical and electrochemical techniques now available offers the possibility of measuring the tribocorrosion rate under well-defined experimental conditions. The programme describes the fundamental mechanisms of tribocorrosion and the original approach developed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) by scientists working at the surface science and technology laboratory (LMCH).
