Transistor States of Operation, The
- Synopsis
- The four states of operation of a transistor that occur in switching applications are examined. If both junctions are biased in the reverse direction the transistor operates in the cut-off state. The normal state is obtained by applying a forward voltage to the emitter-base junction and a reverse voltage to the base-collector junction. The reverse state is achieved by applying a reverse voltage to the emitter-base junction and a forward voltage to the base-collector junction. The saturation state requires the application of a forward voltage to both junctions. In each case the minority concentration graphs are established and from them the collector, emitter and base currents are derived. In addition the equivalent circuit for each state is developed.
