Topics in Earth Sciences 2
- Synopsis
- Seven activities designed as science learning resources: 1-3) Journey to the Centre of the Earth: three linked activities relating to seismic waves and the information they provide about the earth. One can investigate rock types in the mantle and structure of the earth’s core; 4) Exploring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: investigates geological and biological features of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. One can explore the hypotheses that the ridge is underlain by hot material and that the ocean floor is being stretched apart; 5) Rates of Sea-Floor Spreading: uses locations along the Southeast Indian Ridge to examine sea-floor spreading. One can investigate polarity reversals and the use of geomagnetic polarity time-scales to determine the ages of these reversals.
6) Plate Tectonics on a Sphere: allows one to visualise plate motion; explore sea-floor spreading along divergent boundaries; investigate the relative motion of two plates. Using this information one can determine positions of the axes of rotation of pairs of plates, which can be used to determine directions of plate motion; 7) Plate Motion in the Past and Future: investigates the positions of plates and continents in the past 400 Ma and predictions for their positions up to 100Ma in the future. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
