Synopsis
A video-based resource pack. The video is a compilation of five films made during World War 2, complete with original commentaries, which demonstrate the contributions to the war effort made by Indians, West Indians and Africans.
1 (1941, 5 min): Sponsored by the Government of India and the Ministry of Information. Made by Bombay Talkies with a commentary by Z A Bokhari. Shows the kind of training undertaken by the 15th Punjab Regiment and how the troops under Wavell’s command were used in the campaign in Libya against Mussolini in 1940.
2 (1941, 8 min): Sponsored by the Film Advisory Board of India and produced by the Indian Film Unit. Shows Indian troops in Egypt and focuses on the Indian contribution to the Wavell plan against Mussolini’s troops in Libya and East Africa.
3 (1941, 10 min): Sponsored by the Film Advisory Board of India and produced by the Indian Film Unit. Focuses on the Indian home front, the dangers from possible air raids and the necessity for air raid precautions.
4 (1943, 15 min): Sponsored by the Ministry of Information and produced by Paul Rotha Productions. Records and illustrates a BBC broadcast by West Indians in Britain to explain to the British people the contribution of the West Indians to the war effort.
5 (1945, 6 min): Sponsored by the Ministry of Information, a pilot for a projected series to give th British public a bulletin of the war in the Far East. On the campaign in Burma, in which large numbers of West African troops fought.
