Biology of Spiders. No. 7: Capture of Prey: Webless Spiders

Synopsis
Many spiders do not make silken webs. The jumping spiders stalk their prey and pounce when within range. Others lie in wait - they are usually cryptically coloured. The water spider catches prey either on or under the water surface and feeds inside a silken bell. The spitting spider spits secretion from enlarged thoracic glands at the prey which becomes glued down to the substratum. Species include ‘Salticus scenicus’, ‘Micrommata virescens’, ‘Arctosa perita’, ‘Argyroneta aquatica’, ‘Scytodes thoracica’, ‘Thomisus onustus’.
