Biology of Spiders. No. 2 & No. 3: Courtship and Mating
- Synopsis
- No. 3: In ‘Xysticus lanio’ the male laces the female down with silk before mating. ‘Micrommata virescens’ has no apparent courtship; details of palp insertion, inflation and the rise and fall of spines on the male’s legs are shown in close-up. The male of the ‘Meta segmentata’ waits until the female catches prey and then moves in and robs her temporarily as a preliminary to mating.
