Three Painters: Giotto, Rembrandt and Turner

Synopsis
Sir Lawrence Gowing explores the works of three great painters (in three separate programmes), discussing the historical and social backgrounds against which the artists worked and concentrating on a small number of canvasses.
1: The work of Giotto, filmed in Assisi, Padua and Florence. Shows the Scrovegni Chapel in Chapel in Padua with its sequesnce of 34 frescoes.
2: The work of Rembrandt van Rijn, born in Leiden. He spent his working life in Amsterdam and his huge output included drawings, etchings and over 450 oil paintings.
3: The work of J M W Turner, born in London, who produced 528 paintings and and over 19,000 drawings.
