Three Generations of Struggle / Democracy or Disruption: Wangari Maathi and Green Belt

Synopsis
Two films from a series exploring ways of resolving conflicts across Africa.
1: During Eritrea’s 30-year war with Ethiopia, women fought alongside men as equal partners on the front lines. Today, they face a more subtle battle within their own society foresee a long and bitter struggle to bring about an end to sexual discrimination. Here, three generations of women tell their stories of Eritrea’s fight for independence and reflect upon their new fight for equality in their homeland.
2: Founder of the Gren Belt movement that organises rural women to plant and raise trees, Professor Wangar Maathai is a globally recognised environmental leader and an outspoken opponent of the entrenched power structures in Kenya. Kenya’s president Daniel arap Moi sees her as a threat to the country’s security. The film asks what she represents for Africa and African women.
