Three Approaches to Psychotherapy: Richard (3 Parts)

Synopsis
The films compare and contrast psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behaviour modification and cognitive therapy, approaches that widely differ but have many common threads. Each of the three clinicians introduces his approach, interviews the patient Richard, and afterwards comments on the interview.
Part 1: Dr Hans Strupp, an exponent of psychodynamic therapy, tries to identify patterns in Richard’s life, drawing these to his attention and then exploring their ramifications and attempting to establish changes that can help to mitigate earlier damange and build more successful relationships.
Part 2: Dr Donald Meichenbaum, who practices a cognitive behaviour modification approach, attempts to make Richard aware of his thoughts, beliefs, internal dialogues, images, feelings and the ways he appraises the environment, his behavioural patterns in various situations and the reactions he elicits from others. He then encourages Richard to try to experiment with his behaviour in order to discover options and to change.
Part 3: Dr Aaron Beck, a cognitive therapist noted for his work with anxiety and depression, teaches Richard how to identify his own negative thoughts and to rebut them in order to help his anxiety, anger and depression. Dr Beck provides a commentary afterwards.
