Thomas Bewick’s Illustrations

Synopsis
Bewick’s wood engravings transformed the art of English book illustration and laid the foundations for the 19th-century development of illustrated journals for middle-class readership. The slides are made from early editions of ‘Quadrupeds’, ‘British Birds’ and other important titles in the Manchester Metropolitan University Library, and they include examples of whole-page layouts, as well as details of Bewick’s vignettes and one of his wood blocks from Newcastle Library.
