This Sceptred Isle - Scotland
- Synopsis
- A British Transport Films video compilation focusing on the highlands, coasts and cities of Scotland.
1 (1965, 17 min, director Edward McConnell, producer Edgar Anstey): Sketches the emotional quality of life in a great city, by tracing the development of the Glaswegian from a Clysesdale hamlet dweller to the inhabitant of a large city which has both benefited and suffered from unparalleled industrialisation.
2 (1952, 20 min, director John Taylor, producer Edgar Anstey): Looks at the lives of the Highlands people, living in small communities set in beautiful landscapes. Links the then current developments in industry, agriculture and transport with the country’s dramatic past - symbolised by the striking interior of Glamis Castle. Two distinguished Scots, Moray McLaren and Cedric Thorpe Davie, contribute commentary and music to the film.
3 (1956, 21 min, director oe Mendoza, producer Stewart McAllister): An account of the life of poet Robert Burns is set among contemporary scenes of people of south-west Scotland as they grow from childhood to adulthood. A selection of Burns’s songs are heard against a background of the people and countryside he knew and loved. The score was written by Cedric Thorpe Davie, and the songs performed by the Saltire Singers.
4 (1958, 2r min, director Kenneth Fairbairn): Shows the many sporting activities available in Scotland, from the traditional - fishing, sailing on the Clyde, rock-climbing on the Black Cullin of Skye, golfing at Gleneagles - to the more recent activities of skiing, canoeing and pony trekking.
5 (1958, 20 min, director James Ritchie, producer Stewart McAllister): Combining a search for his Scottish ancestry with a holiday, Bernard Braden visits the Firth of Clyde, travelling by train and steamer on his Runabout ticket. Arriving finally in Arran, he finds the ‘Scotland in miniature’ from where his grandmother sailed for the New World.
6 (1975, 14 min, director Ronald Craigen, producer Lionel Cole): Highlights of the Grand Steam Cavalcade held at Shildon, on the Stockton and Darlington railway, on 31 August 1975 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the world’s first public passenger steam railway. - Series
