Thermal Analysis: An Introduction to Principles and Practice (3 Parts)

Synopsis
Aspects of thermal analysis, the study of the effects of heating andc cooling on the physical and chemical properties of a material, illustrated with computer-generated graphics and video microscopy.
1: Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), both concerned with the energy changes of a sample, in relation to a reference material, on heating or cooling. Covers: theory; the range of apparatus available; the practical aspects of instrument calibration; the choice of suitable experimental conditions; applications from a wide range of industries and scientific disciplines.
2: Techniques of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), in which the mass of a sample is measured as the sample is heated, and evolved gas analysis (EGA), methods of monotoring the gases evolved from a sample. Covers: theory; the instrumentation involved; FTIR and mass spectrometry as means of evolved gas analysis; EGA coupled with various thermoanalytical techniques; the applications of TGA combined with EGA.
3: Techniques of thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), which are used to investigate certain physical changes that occur on heating, such as changes in size, shape, stiffness, or viscosity. Covers: theory; the range of instruments and probes for specialist applications; their use in the study of polymers and systems containg polymers; the determination of properties such as viscoelasticity and glass transitions; practical applications from industry.
