Synopsis

Early films from the Paper Print Collection of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, shown in their entirety. Titles are ‘The drunkard’s reformation’ (March 1909), made by the American Motoscope and Biograph Co. (AM & B), directed by D W Griffith, cameraman G W ‘Billy’ Bitzer; ‘Faust aux enfers’ (Dec 1903), filmed by George Melies, with Melies as Mephistopholes; ‘Uncle Tom’s cabin’ (July 1903), filmed by Edwin Porter for the Edison Company, with settings from a scenic company in Battle Creek, Michigan and dating from the 1880s; ‘Streeter’s Zouaves’ (Sept 1901), filmed by Edison, probably on a fairground racetrack in New Jersey; ‘Duel in Macbeth’ (July 1905), (AM & B), cameraman B W ‘Billy’ Bitzer; ‘Duel in By right of sword’ (Jan 1904), (AM & B), cameraman A E Weed.
