Thatcher’s Harvest

Synopsis
A filmed record of the rethatching of a Suffolk cottage from the drilling of the wheat seed on Robert and John Foster’s Red Barn Farm. The farmers show how they protect the growing crop and prepare a 50-year-old Lanz binder to cut the long-stemmed wheat. After cutting, the crop is stood in shocks before being carted and stacked. A traditional threshing follows. When thatcher Paul Congdon receives the straw he prepares the yealms or bundles that he carries on the cottage roof. Shows the complete process of securing the thatch with broaches, building up the ridge line, decorating it with hazel rods, cutting out and trimming.
