Biological Membranes: Chemical Constituents

Synopsis
Proteins and lipids are the basic building blocks of membranes as demonstrated in the molecular model. The functional groups possess hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas. Therefore amphipathic molecules arise such as lecithin, a cholin-phosphoglyceride. The membrane-like structures created in an aqueous environment show the same aspect as the ‘unit membrane’ when imaged by the electron microscope.
