Biological Control 2
- Synopsis
- Biological control can be one of the most effective of all methods of pest control - self-regulating, safe and very cost-effective - but it has a limited success rate. There is interest in improving the selection of control agents by applying theoretical principles of predator/prey interactions in puopulation dynamics. Looks at the problems and successes of setting up a project concerned with the eradication of an insect pest of cassava in eastern Africa. Shows the classic study of the winter moth ‘Operophtera brumata’ in Whtham Wood and the success in Canada of the parasitic fly ‘Cyzenis sp.' in controlling the moth when it became a pst in the 1950s. Laboratory experiments demonstrate the searching behaviour of a parasitic wasp ‘Venturia sp.' attacking flour moth caterpillars.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
