Synopsis: Uses Canadian television as an example to raise issues of culture and identity. The government promotes national identity through strict regulations about the amount of ‘Canadian content’ while at the same time is reducing funding to public services broadcasters who are in increasingly fierce competition with US programmes. Contributors from broadcasting stations, government, the media and pressure groups expound the arguments in a debate that has relevance to many other ocuntries facing similar challenges.
