Accessability: Evaluating IV Access Choices

Synopsis
A clinical study module for nurse training intended to raise awareness of the changing role of nurses in the assessment of patients requiring intravenous (IV) therapy via peripheral and central venous catheters and in the care of patients with these devices. Experts differentiate between the insertion sites and the indication for use. Illustrates the characteristics of peripheral venous cannulae, midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCS) and centrally inserted central catheters and implantable ports. Nurses demonstrate both the insertions of peripheral line venous catheters and PICCS. Experts summarise the key legal and professional issues related to nurses’ role undertaking these procedures The assessment of patients prior to commencing IV therapy is illustrated. Also looks at the main aspects of patient care related to the maintenance of central venous catheters.
