Target for Tonight

Synopsis
Illustrates the work of the Bomber Command in World War 2. Shows what it was like to fly on some of the earliest Wellington bomber raids agains Nazi Germany, following the fictional ‘F for Freddie’ on a typical raid from target designation though to debriefing after the mission. During the attack the bomber is hit by anti-aircraft fire and has to struggle back to base. The film was very popular in its day and was a form of reassurance for a hard-pressed public that Britain was striking back. The effects of the bombing are grossly exaggerated. The film was made with the co-operation of the No. 149 Squadron at RAF Mildenhall; all parts were played by genuine RAF ground and air crew, many of whom were later killed in action.
