Synopsis
Series on the history of maps, with actors recreating key moments from map-making history and cartographers explaining the importance of maps.
1: The history of London as seen through various of maps produced from 1745 onwards.
2: Sea charts, essential for avoiding hazards at sea. A re-creation shows Samuel Pepys in an imaginary interview for ‘Desert Island Discs’ and Captain Bligh claiming that Captain Hook took the credit for much of Bligh ‘s own work.
3: Route-finding and specialist road maps and atlases, which first appeared in the 19th century.
4: Maps in war: looks at World War 1 battle fields of Cambrai through maps made on during the battle.
5: How mapping land and setting frontiers have always been subject to controversy, with stories from Elizabethian England to the modern Middle East.
6: How maps can never tell the whole truth: secrecy, censorship, disinformation and half-truths are all part of map-making history.
