T S Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’: A Poem of Hope

Synopsis
Professor Harold Brooks questions those views which see Eliot’s poem as one of despair and horror. He indicates the three main planes on which Eliot handles his criticism of modern society, and takes the listener through the five movements of the poem, from the shrinking from the new spring at the beginning to the longing for spring at the end, analysing the symbols, at the same time destructive and regenerative, and so demonstrating the hope to be found in the poem.
