T J Clark and Michael Fried in Conversation About Jackson Pollock
- Alternative title
- Jackson Pollock: Tim Clark and Michael Fried in Conversation
- Synopsis
- Art historian T J Clark and art critic Michael Fried in the past occupied opposing positions. Clark was the eminent protagonist of the social history of art, structured on a Marxist approach to history which saw art as produced in a socio-economic context. Fried, on the other hand, was an arch-modernist believing art to be about itself alone, separate from social meaning. However, since those days the two have moved closer. Clark accepts the canonical greatness of Pollock’s work and Fried no longer claims that art functions only in an ‘optical way’. Differences from the past surface to a notion of crisis in Pollock’s work and Fried’s uneasiness with associating human experience with art.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
